The threat of wildfires in Florida is on the rise as temperatures climb and rainfall drops off.
Florida's wildfire season is just starting to peak right now. The Division of Forestry reports there have been about 1,000 wildfires so far this year. But that's not bad compared to some years.
State fire officials say we've broken a five-year drought in Florida.
Jim Karels is chief of the state's Division of Forestry.
He says the state is getting into a dry period especially in northern Florida.
He says there could be increased fire activity in north Florida if we don't have a soaking rain in the next week or two.
Karels says South Florida is in a little better shape right now following recent rainfall there.
