Geneva County’s temporary jail is expected to be open within the next several weeks.
Sheriff Greg Ward says he's awaiting approval from the State Department of Corrections before transferring inmates into the metal, dome structures.
It's located in the parking lot of the Geneva County Courthouse. A delegation of Covington County officials toured the quarter-of-a-million dollar facility today.
They're looking to build a similar structure adjacent to the Covington County jail in Andalusia. It would be used to house the jail work release trustees.
Covington Co. Commissioner Harold Elmore said, "It looks good what we are seeing here is cheaper. More feasible, we got a comparison bid for another type of building... its 50-thousand dollars more for the brick, metal buildings."
Both the Covington and Geneva County jails have been plagued by overcrowding. Officials hope the dome structures can alleviate the problem.
