Congressional Gold Medal

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby wants British Prime Minister Tony Blair to receive the Congressional Gold Medal.

Shelby helped pushed legislation through the Senate Banking Committee Wednesday that would give Blair Congress' highest honor.

The Tuscaloosa Republican and the bill's sponsor, North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole said Blair should be recognized for his strong support for the United States during the war with Iraq. Shelby said Blair backed US policy despite intense political opposition.

Similar legislation is pending in the U.S. House.

Only 17 foreign nationals have received the honor, which was first issued in 1776.
