Florida Phone Service

The cost of having basic phone service could go up dramatically for Floridians in the coming years under a bill passed by the Senate.

Supporters of the legislation say it will benefit consumers by encouraging competition for local phone service, which will eventually drive down rates.

But, its estimated the rates for basic service could go up from $3 to $7.25 a month over the next four years if the Public Service Commission approves the increases.

After that, rates could continue to increase by up to 20-percent a year.

Opponents insist it’s a bad consumer bill, saying there's no guarantee that long distance rates will go down for customers.
