A Dothan man convicted of killing his live-in girlfriend received a maximum sentence Thursday in a Houston County courtroom.
Twenty-five-year-old Antonio Smith was sentenced to 99 years in prison for murdering 21-year-old Kakendra Kirkland.
Smith was convicted for the murder of Kirkland, who was shot and killed in January of 2000.
Defense attorneys asked for a 25-year sentence, arguing that Smith had no criminal history.
But the victim's mother told the judge that Smith deserved more.
Smith will be eligible for parole.
