County Funds

Houston County commissioners have taken steps to keep closer tabs on tax dollars they provide to outside agencies.

It requires non-profit and non-governmental agencies to submit an audited financial statement or proof of the same in order to be eligible for county funds.

The issue came up after some expenditures by the Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership were questioned.

Director David Morales has been suspended with pay by his board of directors and the City of Dothan and the Houston County Commissioners have suspended funding until an audit is done.

The new policy will not require private organizations to make their finances public.

County attorney Gary Sherrer says the new policy is not unreasonable because the commission is required by law to keep tabs on tax dollars.
