Houston County's campaign to collect overdue payments from people who don't usually pay their garbage bills is working according to Houston County officials.
The county charges $9.60 a month for once a week curbside service.
But nearly 400 accounts are more than $200 behind in their payments, which means they haven't made a payment in years.
A few months ago, nearly 1,500 accounts were at least two months delinquent, but county officials say some people would rather pay-up than go to jail.
County officials say they're trying to collect delinquent accounts in order to avoid increasing garbage fees and penalizing those who do pay on time.
