33-year-old Chris Ford locked himself inside his apartment at Oates Estate, and refused to let law enforcement officers in. Ford was later apprehended and taken to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson says, "I'm sure the loss of his job, and the loss of his family puts a great deal of stress on him."

Sheriff Olson says it's always painful when a former colleague hits rock bottom.

He says, "Anytime you're dealing with one of your own, what you consider one of your own, it's always tough situation to go out there and have to police them, but we have an obligation to the public and the court system."

Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Olson and area law enforcement officers responded to a standoff with 33-year-old Chris Ford.

Ford, a former law enforcement officer for Ozark and Midland City Police Department locked himself in his Oates Estates' apartment and threatened to kill himself.

Sheriff Olson says, “He said, “You know I would never hurt a law enforcement officer, but I'm going to have to make you take me out.”” Officials say Ford has previous charges for domestic violence.

Organizing a response of this magnitude is major undertaking for every department involved. Myron Williams, the Chief Deputy of the Ozark Police Department says, "I can't begin to tell you the amount of costs we have involved, but it would certainly be in the thousands of dollars range."

Ford is still at the southeast Alabama Medical Center. Officials say the self-inflicted stab wound to his chest is non-life threatening. After he has healed, he will be transported to the Houston County Jail.

Officials have yet to set a bond or first appearance. Ford is charged with one count of domestic violence, one count of first-degree burglary, and violation of a family protective order. Ozark Police say there could be more charges in the future.
