Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor has joined 40 other states in a settlement of a lawsuit against H & R Block.
Under the agreement, the tax preparer will reimburse consumers who purchased their $22 "Peace of Mind" guarantee.
The company also agreed to pay up to $5,000 the amount of any tax owed due to a preparer's error. Pryor says the company was adding the charge to everyone's tax return without asking the taxpayer if they wanted to pay it.
Customers who paid the fee and did NOT use it have six months to make a claim under the agreement. They can call or connect to the company Web site for details.
