An award winning school program in the Wiregrass has been downsized because of fewer state and federal education dollars. But, the migrant program at Slocomb Elementary remains a model for Alabama.
Nearly ten percent of Slocomb Elementary students are Hispanic and many come to class with little or no English skills.The school's award winning migrant program has been scaled back due to fewer education dollars.
But, Principal Mary Ann Hidle says everyone has pulled together. Teachers have found that students working with students creates the most effective education tool, it's a tutor based system.
School officials say they take pride in the multi-cultural student population.
Slocomb teachers credit migrant liaison Letty Andrews with helping improve the English language skills of many of the Hispanic students.
