A Dothan police officer is staying on the job, despite repeated efforts to fire him. That's because the Alabama Supreme Court has refused to hear the case involving Lieutenant Stan Devane.
Devane was fired nearly two years ago for taking city property after he traded some old police holsters and ammunition for a deer rifle at a pawn shop.
Devane claimed he tried to turn in the items but was told to keep them and do whatever he wanted with them.
Although a grand jury refused to press criminal charges, the city personnel board upheld Devane's termination.
But, last year a circuit judge ordered him re-instated with back pay. Since that time, the board has tried unsuccessfully to have that decision reversed. Devane's attorney says the high court's rejection of the case effectively ends the legal battle.
