School Tax Revenue

The Houston County Commission and the Community Education Committee came together Tuesday to talk about school funding. The meeting was to find solutions on how to restore a one-cent sales tax for education.

The money was once totally earmarked for schools. But since 1989, county commissioners have used one-third of the revenue for road and building projects.

If Dothan City and Houston County Schools can get that money, they would split about $4 million.

During the meeting, a member of the education committee asked the county commission chairman if he would give them the one-cent sales tax.

The committee said the public sent a message when they voted down the last school tax and says until the county shows accountability, the citizens will never vote yes to another school tax.
