Amtrak Problems

David Gunn has told a Senate panel that Amtrak will start turning away passengers and moving trains to storage by the middle of next week, if it doesn't get help closing a $200 million shortfall.

Caused in part by uncertainty over Amtrak's future, the crisis is keeping the spotlight on the railroad's immediate survival.

Lawmakers from both parties are urging the administration to focus on rescuing Amtrak first before looking ahead. Federal officials are reviewing Amtrak's request for a loan guarantee that would help it borrow the money it needs.
