A Coffee County couple was swindled of thousands of dollars by a young family who they were trying to help.
Wayne and Joann Jackson operate an auction business outside their home in the rural basin community.
Last February, they took in Billy Ray and Karen Barker along with their 21-month-old son. The Barkers claimed they had no where to live and were sleeping in a van.
But last week, Mrs. Jackson says the couple stole $2,600 in cash, along with debit and credit cards.
Several purchases on the credit cards have already been made in Dothan and Cottondale, Florida.
"We had no idea that they would do anything like this. They were good quiet people. Good people; it makes you feel like you've been robbed more than what they got. When someone does you this way. I don't know how to tell you I feel," said Mrs. Jackson.
If you may know the whereabouts of Billy Ray and Karen Barker, contact the Coffee County Sheriff's Department at 334-894-5535.
They were last seen in a goldish-brown with a blue stripe Chevy conversion van. It may have a Georgia or New Mexico license plate.
