It seems time waits for no one in the county seat of Walton County. Expensive repairs to the Defuniak Springs city municipal clock is expected to be controversial.

Back in 1919, the First National Bank put up the clock on Baldwin Avenue in the downtown district, but time took its toll over recent years. The price tag is $43,000 to repair the time piece with authentic parts from the early 20th century. A second proposal is less than $5,000, but that would entail the use of a modern, internal mechanism.

The city council is asking the Walton County Historical Association if it wants to help fund the project. Previously, several city council members said it would be unwise to spend tens-of-thousands of dollars during these hard financial times.

For whom the bell tolls will soon be voted upon by the Defuniak Springs city council.
