Alabama residents will have more legal safeguards if they choose to defend themselves against an intruder instead of fleeing.
Governor Bob Riley signed the new law which gives homeowners and vehicle occupants the option to use deadly force if they believe their lives are being threatened by an intruder.
It does not, however, allow the use of deadly force against those who have the right to be in a house nor will it be against the law for officers to carry out their duties.
Alabama is one of 11 states with such a law.
