Generators Safety Tips

Portable generators come in handy when events like hurricanes knock out power. They're also a potential hazard.

Generators produce deadly carbon monoxide.

The US Consumer Product Safety commission reports 55 people died last year from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator; more than half of those deaths occurred in the aftermath of a major hurricane.

Exhaust from one running generator is equivalent to fumes from hundreds of idling cars.

Always use generators outside in a dry area, away from windows, doors and air conditioners that might pull the colorless, odorless gas inside.

Consumers should install CO2 alarms with back-up batteries and read the instruction manual.

If you start feeling dizzy, get to fresh air as quickly as possible
