Dothan Tourism Increase

The Circle City and surrounding areas appear to be popular places for tourists.

Dothan area convention and visitors bureau officials say tourism increased 10 percent, between 2004 and 2005.

Officials say they are not exactly sure how many tourists visited our area in 2005, but they say tourists did spend a little more than $184 million.

Tourism officials say more tourists are coming to Dothan because of it's proximity to Florida and the panhandle, and because of the popularity of golf in the area.

Bob Hendrix, Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, said "Well because we're also a major overnight stop to and from Florida; there are also many wonderful sports programs and tournaments that we run; we're becoming the amateur sports capitol of Alabama."

Tourism in Houston County directly and indirectly employs close to 4,000 people.

On a larger scale, more than 21 million tourists visited the state of Alabama in 2005, contributing more than $7 billion to the state's economy.
