It's not uncommon for 14- and 15-year-olds to come to Alabama from other states to be married.
However, that would change under a bill that was passed in the Alabama House Tuesday. The bill changes the minimum age for getting married in Alabama with parent’s permission from 14 to 16 years old.
The minimum age for getting married without permission would remain at age 18. The bill passed 99-0. The bill was sponsored by Representative Laura Hall of Huntsville.
Hall said she believes age 14 is too young to handle the responsibilities of marriage.
The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
