Road work in Georgia can be a very dangerous profession. Since 1973, 56 Georgia DOT workers have died while working on state roads.
Drivers are being urged to be extra careful while driving nears a construction zone on Highway 84 at the Alabama-Georgia line.
Two-way traffic has been switched from the existing east and west bound lanes, to the new east bound lanes.
The purpose is to establish new overflow bridges and make traveling on the highway safer for motorists.
Georgia Dept. of Transportation, Andy Oliver said, “I wouldn't say that it was really dangerous or anything, but when you have a barrier into oncoming traffic, it's a lot safer than it would be a two lane highway.”
The project began in 2004 and is expected to be completed later on this year.
