Education Tax Update

tuition hike

Houston County commissioners said they're ready to talk about a one-cent sales tax increase, but they're not ready to take action yet.

The Houston County School Board has asked that the commission impose the tax hike immediately or hold a referendum in August to let voters decide.

Dothan city schools would also benefit from the increase.

That's because the extra $12 million generated would be split 60/40 between the two systems based on enrollment.

County commissioners asked both school boards for resolutions on the tax increase proposal, but Dothan school board members are still undecided.

County Commission Chairman Mark Culver said it's unlikely commissioners will approve a sales tax increase on their own and until the city school board responds, a public referendum could be delayed.

County commissioners will talk more at their next meeting. Dothan School Board will take up the issue again on Monday.
