Tutwiler Transfers

A Montgomery federal judge has not yet ruled on the state's bid to move some female prisoners to out-of-state lockups.

The proposed transfer would reduce the inmate population at Tutwiler by the end of June.

In December, Federal Judge Myron Thompson ruled that the prison violated the U.S. Constitution because it was so overcrowded and unsafe.

Thompson's ruling came in a lawsuit filed by Tutwiler inmates.

On Feb. 21, Gov. Riley's administration told Thompson it would send 290 of the present 977 inmates to out-of-state lockups.

Attorneys for the inmates object to this plan.
