MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Gov. Bob Riley issued a mandatory evacuation order Sunday morning for some parts of coastal Mobile and Baldwin counties as Hurricane Gustav spun toward the Gulf Coast.
The order did not immediately include Gulf Shores and Orange Beach where thousands of tourists, including some Louisiana evacuees, have rooms. Tourism officials estimate some 40,000 visitors are on the Alabama coast for Labor Day.
Riley says Gustav could pose a flood threat to the areas covered by the evacuation order. Rainfall amounts could total seven inches.
Officials expect 45-55 mph winds after midnight and gusts over 70 mph on Monday that could bring down trees and power lines.
At a news conference at state Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Clanton, Riley says evacuees from Mississippi and Louisiana should head north and not go to Alabama's coast.
He said evacuation traffic is "flowing relatively well," and it's not yet necessary to reverse the flow to northbound only on Interstate 65.
