The Coffee County school board approved a $1.8 million bid from a Montgomery construction company to do a massive renovation of Zion Chapel School.
The work will include new elementary classrooms in the century-old building. Renovations are also planned for the school's gymnasium.
Zion Chapel has seen a large increase in student enrollment over recent years.
Coffee county school superintendent, Dr. Linda Ingram, says the construction bid was less than expected.
"And this will give us 8 additional classrooms. We currently have 4 portables up there that are being used by our reading coaches and a science lab. We’ll move them indoors to a building and hire new teachers," said Dr. Ingram.
A new roof was installed this year at Zion Chapel School.
