The four-laning of Highway 84 in Covington County has led to important training for Opp firefighters.
Opp Fire Chief Joey Williams says his men have been able to do actual burns recently on several abandoned homes along the four-lane construction route.
Chief Williams says it helps eliminate the eyesores for the city and gives valuable hands-on experience for those who risk their lives to save others.
"It is great training. Feel the fire and the smoke, see the smoke. The sensation the heat, it gives the fireman closes look at fire at the different stages"
Many of the abandoned homes were left by the owners following the buyout by the state to expand Highway 84.
