The Kinston city council met in a special meeting to address a controversy brewing between the council and the town's volunteer fire department.
Several firefighters say the council tries to micro-manage their budget and other aspects of their department.
One firefighter recently quit after a physical confrontation with a local official at a fire scene.
The disputes have led to gossip in the small Coffee County town.
"To get all the rumors and disputes discussed and get on the table. We are all adults. We can work it out for the sake of the town. I really think we can," said Viola Shaffer, Kinston Councilwoman
During the meeting, Kinston Fire Chief Greg Seay resigned his post but both the council and the volunteer firefighters agreed to keep the lines of communication open.
