The Advertiser, a Montgomery newspaper, is reporting in Wednesday's edition that Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor received a raise of almost $40,000 when he began his second term in office Jan. 20.

The increase raised Pryor's annual salary from $124,950 to $163,428. The raise was part of a 1999 law that increased pay for judges. By law, Pryor is paid the same salary as an associate justice of the state Supreme Court.

Pryor was in Washington, DC Tuesday and could not be reached for comment.

Rep. Demetrius Newton of Birmingham said Pryor's raise was an unintended consequence of the pay hike for judges.

Luverne state Senator Wendell Mitchell said he didn't know how Pryor received the raise but thought it was acceptable.
