Logan International Airport in Boston became the first airport in the country to receive federal approval for its luggage screening system.
The system is designed to scan all "checked" bags for explosives by the end of the year.
The Transportation Security Administration approved the plan Monday.
The system will cost Logan's airport authority about $100 million for the expansion of the airports 16 baggage handling rooms.
The Transportation Security Administration took over security at the nation's airports last February. They will pay for the explosive detection systems as well as personnel that will be operating them.
Two of the planes hijacked on Sept. 11 took off from Logan Airport and were flown into the World Trade Center.
