Gov.r Bob Riley met with key state officials to discuss beefing up security in Alabama and protecting certain critical sites as war with Iraq appears to be just days away.
At the request of President Bush and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge to all governors, Riley said the security status was being heightened in the state and that he and other state officials were going over a list of sites in the state that federal officials consider potential targets.
Riley would not name those "potential targets."
The officials meeting with Riley included the state's adjutant general Major General Mark Bowen, Public Safety Director Mike Coppage, and homeland security director Jim Walker.
Riley said the officials would be discussing whether additional National Guard troops would need to be called up to beef up security in Alabama. He also said Alabama residents need to be "more alert" in coming days.
The governor said security is being beefed up quietly at the Capitol and in other buildings in the Capitol complex.
