Wiregrass residents will soon have one less contaminant to worry about in the water supply.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is requiring all owners and operators of underground storage tanks to be responsible for leaks.
New prohibition regulations require owners to perform leak inspections through installation of a computer system in the tank or monthly analysis of the contents.
Owners and operators may be subject to fines if they do not comply.
“It's very important for the Wiregrass are to have these new provisions because of the because of all the public water supplies and private wells that rely on groundwater for drinking water.”
Enforcement of the regulations starts on August 6.
