Motorists traveling between Coffee and Covington counties along Highway 52 experienced traffic delays early Thursday morning.

Law enforcement, utility crews and an Elba-based house moving company worked to get the old Williams Grain Company moved on Highway 52 to its new home in downtown Kinston.

Built during the depression of the 1930s, a Chicago-based railroad company has ordered its owner to move it away from the tracks.

"It’s gorgeous inside. Constructed in 1933 with fine lumber, it was a situation where if we didn't move it, we would lose it and that wasn't an option," says the Building Owner Joan Stephens.

For the movers, the biggest concern was not to roll the 85-foot long building, but the unique size and age presented a unique set of problems.

"Every job is unique, no two are ever alike. It’s an old building, and the hardest part was getting it propped to move, it was on the ground," said Jeff Hussey with Hussey & Sons Moving Inc.

"It was a well made building. It was made to store all kinds of grains, it was solid and wouldn't fall apart," said Howard Bess.

Stephens didn't wish to give the moving cost, but says it will be in the thousands.

The Old Williams Grain facility initially built in 1933 can now be found along Highway 52 in Kinston.
