Flood Insurance

Some residents of rural Geneva County could be fined or arrested for refusing to comply with federal flood insurance guidelines. The homes are in Simmons Creek, a subdivision located West of Geneva County 41.

About 10 landowners have not complied with the guidelines set up by the national flood insurance program. They require any structure that received at least 50 percent damage during the floods of 1990 or 1994 to be raised above an elevation considered a 100-year-flood level.

It could cost homeowners thousands of dollars to comply, raising dwellings two to eight feet. The homeowners who don't comply jeopardize the whole county being eligible for national flood insurance or federal grants.
