Barbour County Schools

Barbour County officials have come up with a temporary plan that will allow three elementary schools to stay open next year.

On Monday night, the county commission passed sales and property tax resolutions.

The commission approved a five-cent sales tax on each container of bottled water and soft drinks, a one-cent sales tax and a six-mil property tax increase.

The bills will go to Rep. Billy Beasley to introduce to Alabama lawmakers.

Barbour County Superintendent Vic Adkison said the resolution will provide a little more time to come up with the money.

If the sales tax proposals pass the State Legislature, they will go into effect immediately. However, the six-mil property tax must be put to county voters for approval or rejection.
