Battleship Park Gets Money to Help With Recovery

The Birmingham Naval Reserve Association presented a check for $257,000 Monday to Battleship Memorial Park officials.

The donation will help park officials pay for damage caused by Hurricane Katrina last August.

The park, including the battleship USS Alabama, sustained an estimated $5 million in storm damage. Katrina’s winds left the World War II vessels listing to the port side at 8 degrees.

It has been reduced to 2 degrees and that the ship will eventually be completely righted.

The 41-year-old park, one of Alabama’s and Mobile's top tourist attractions, reopened Jan. 9.
