A former mechanic convicted of raping and murdering 11-year-old Florida girl was sentenced Wednesday to death.
Joseph P. Smith showed no emotion as the judge read the officials sentences, death for the murder count and life in prison for kidnapping and sexual battery of Carlie Brucia.
The abduction was caught on a car wash security camera.
The jury that convicted Smith in November had recommended by a vote of 10-2 that he be executed.
Smith says he had taken heroin and cocaine in an attempt to kill himself before he abducted Carlie on a little over two years ago.
He says Wednesday that he didn't remember much about that day and asked the judge to spare his life for the sake of his family.
