Two Republican governors are hinting at legal action to block an Arab company from taking over operations of some major American ports.

George Pataki of New York and Robert Ehrlich of Maryland say they have doubts about a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates taking over a British company that has been running six ports, including New York and Baltimore.

Both governors have indicated they may try to cancel port lease arrangements because of the deal.

News of the port decision by the Bush administration has triggered protests from both political parties in Congress.

But the move is supported by former President Carter, a Democrat
and frequent critic of the administration. Carter tells C-N-N he doesn't think there's any particular threat to security.
