Huntsville Standoff Ends

A man whom witnesses described as “very unstable” is in police custody. The unidentified gunman was among 15 people looking for work Tuesday morning when he apparently opened fire following an argument over a CD player.

The shootings resulted in the deaths of four fellow job seekers -- a fifth man was wounded.

Police said the gunman drove off after the shooting and was later cornered at his apartment in west Huntsville, where he was taken into custody after a standoff of several hours. Police Lt. Vince Dauro said the man surrendered shortly after 3 p.m.

Officers had surrounded the apartment building and evacuated the nearby area.
The shootings took place around 6:30 a.m. in the lobby of Labor Ready where dozens of people were gathered, waiting for work.

Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said the man who did the shooting regularly went to the office looking for work and was well known both to employees and other laborers. The suspect's name was not released.
