Erol Dawson, Richard Berry and Lafreddie Goodson were arrested Wednesday morning at a Dothan Grocery Store.

All three are charged with possession of a forged instrument for allegedly trying to cash a phony payroll check supposedly issued by Sears, Roebuck and Company.

Investigators also seized $4,000 in cash and thousands of dollars in merchandise that was allegedly purchased with the money.

Police said the fake checks began turning up Tuesday in Abbeville.

Authorities there notified Dothan Police who in turn contacted local merchants.

The suspects were caught in the act when they tried to cash one of the checks and a store manager called police.

Investigators said blank checks available at any office supply store were apparently forged using a special computer program.

They also said additional charges could be filed in the case if more phony checks turn up.
