Florida Teacher Shortage

The teachers are needed before August because of the class size amendment, the growing number of Florida students and teacher retirements and transfers.

State education officials believe that about 5,000 to 7,000 teachers will be needed just to deal with the requirements of reducing the number of students by two in each classroom next year.

A board of education spokesman said another 15,000 teachers will be needed to handle Florida's growing population and the number of teachers retiring or resigning.

The Board of Education decided to hold a workshop within the next month on the issue of recruiting and hiring a corps of new teachers.
