A 150-year-old tradition for one Wiregrass town is on the verge of change, as the city of Elba moves one step closer to alcohol sales.
On Monday night the town council approved two separate requests for liquor licenses.
The request came from a convenience store owner who wants to sell beer and wine at his business. The council also approved the request of a resident who wants to open a package store.
Since its incorporation 150 years ago, Elba has always been dry. But last November, voters approved a referendum that would allow the sale of alcohol.
Now that the town council has given its approval, the Alabama Beverage Commission will continue the process by reviewing license requests.
