For the 19th year, AAA Alabama is offering New Years party goers a safe way to get home if they drink too much alcohol. The "Tow For Life" program offers to tow people's vehicles up to ten miles to their home free-of-charge.
The tow truck driver will check the identification of the driver, and take the keys when they take the vehicle to its destination.
AAA spokesman Clay Ingram says in order to qualify for a free tow call 1-800-222-4357 (1-800-AAA-HELP). He said the vehicle must be operable.
The Birmingham-based auto club also encourages New Year's revelers to take other steps to avoid impaired driving. Tips include appointing a designated driver or take a taxi. Party hosts can also take an impaired guest home -- allow them to spend the night or take them to a hotel.
