The Pentagon is confirming that it is cutting the US military presence in Iraq by seven-thousand troops, or two combat brigades.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced today in Iraq that two Army brigades that had been scheduled for combat tours will no longer deploy to Iraq. One is from Fort Riley, Kansas; the other is in Kuwait.

Pentagon officials say that more troop realignments are expected soon.

Troops that had been deployed to keep the recent parliamentary elections peaceful will now begin to come home.

Some combat troops also will be leaving, but the overall troop strength won't be affected. They will be replaced by other American soldiers who will focus on training and mentoring Iraqi security forces.
