Residents of Dothan are invited to meet with the newly formed Low Income Housing Coalition of Alabama to talk about problems facing low income families when it comes to finding places to live.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday afternoon and organizers hope to raise awareness for the growing housing problem in Dothan and surrounding areas.

"We hope to make it better known to the public that a segment of our community is unable to find or afford decent housing," said William Block with the Saliba Center.

Making that known to the public should be easy enough, especially with the currant conditions of the economy. But, the housing coalition isn't trying to get people into shiny new homes; they want them to find any homes at all.

"People are being forced to move into lower rental properties that may not have refrigerators or air conditioning or maintenance might not be provided, it's something that I wouldn't want to move into," said Block.

The Section 8 Program was designed to help people pay for private rentals at apartment complexes around the city of Dothan, but there is an extensive waiting list and in the meantime, people must simply find a place to live.

The end result: buildings not intended to house many families become the refuge for sometimes 15 people, like the now burned down Dusy Street Apartments. So, can new construction make more room for those who need a place to live?

Dothan Housing Authority Director Glenn Franklin says, "It’s difficult with construction prices, what they are right now. If there's not some type of subsidy tied to it by the federal government then it's difficult for the low income families to afford those units."
