The Alabama Army and Air National Guard commemorates its 369th birthday today with a special ceremony at its headquarters in Montgomery.
It was on this day in 1693 when the first militia unit in Massachusetts was created. That unit served as the forerunner to today's National Guard, which has duel missions on the federal and state level.
Since September 2001, approximately ten-thousand 500 Army and Air Guard personnel statewide have been called to active duty in the war on terrorsim.
In August, more than four-thousand Guard personnel were called to assist citizens in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
