After a two-day trial, a Convington County jury has cleared Gantt Mayor David Harrell of voter fraud charge stemming from the 2000 Mayor's Election.

Gantt is a small community located several miles outside Andalusia in Covington County. It's about 65 miles Northwest of Dothan.

An investigation by Attorney General Bill Pryor's staff led to Harrell's indictment in February 2001.

Harrell was charged with two felony counts and one misdemeanor count of illegally changing absentee ballots in the 2000 town elections.

One felony charge and the misdemeanor charge were dismissed because they involved the ballot of a convicted felon, who shouldn't have been voting.

Harrell's term ends in 2004.

He said he hasn't made up his mind about seeking re-election. But he said he's leaning against it, even though he was acquitted.
