Houston County has the second highest divorce rate in the state and local organizations are taking action to help reverse these numbers.
Several local organizations are working in the Wiregrass area to help promote more stable households, which offer healthy environments for children.
Divorce takes a toll on families emotionally and also financially.
“Children living with a male head of household are not as likely to live in an impoverished house as a female," says Mary Palo, with HIVE Creative Group.
To help reverse these statistics, national and local organizations are stepping in to promote a more positive message about marriage.
"To reduce rates, we're doing marriage education for people getting married and those who are married, teaching them how to communicate and budget," said Palo.
Supporters of these new programs are trying to share with young couples preparing for marriage, which an ideal relationship will have ups and downs, but is worth the effort.
Both the HIVE and HOPE group are creating programs to educate couples about marriage and the positive benefits a healthy relationship can offer to a man and woman.
