A mechanic has been convicted of kidnapping, raping and strangling 11-year-old Carlie Brucia.
The jury deliberated for about five hours before convicting 39-year-old Joseph Smith of first-degree murder, kidnapping and capital sexual battery on the eighth day of his trial. He now faces the possibility of receiving the death penalty at sentencing set for November 28th.
He didn't show any emotion when the verdict was read and was brought by sheriff's deputies to be fingerprinted in the courtroom.
Carlie's disappearance on February first, 2004 sparked a massive search for her in the Sarasota area. Her half-naked body was found
more than four days later at a church property.
Her abduction received worldwide attention after it was captured by a security camera and broadcast on television.
