Several Downtown Building Vandalized with Spray Paint

Several buildings in downtown Dothan were vandalized this week with a recognizable image that resembles a popular movie character.

In the 2005 film, V for Vendetta, the antagonist tells the masses to remember the 5th of November, but this week in Dothan, the 5th of June might be the more appropriate date, as the image of a V makes its appearance on several downtown locations.

"We’ve never had a problem with any type of vandalism down here, but over the weekend, one of the business owners happened to notice some graffiti or vandalism to her building," said Cathy Cole with the Downtown Group.

Three vacant buildings downtown were tagged with the image, and a post office box and the second door of the Foster Street Café.

The owner, Tara Wilson, had mixed feelings about the event.

"I think they tried to hit places that they didn't think were occupied. Where they did mine really doesn't look like it was on a section that belongs to my shop, but it's still aggravating because it does set back and make a bad impression of what's going on downtown," said Wilson.

In the film, V used terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society, and the mask used in the film is a reference to Guy Fawkes. He was one of five conspirators involved in a plot to kill King James in 1605.

While the intentions of these artists might not have been terrorism or assassination, many think it is just a prank gone wrong.

"That’s what it looks like, it was just a prank where maybe some kids walked down and it looks like they also had a stencil and just spray painted this item on the walls," said Lt. David Jay with the Dothan Police Dept.
