IRS Extensions

It's getting easier for taxpayers to get more time to file their returns.

Starting next year, the IRS says people who need more time to file can get a six-month extension using just one simplified form.

Until now, it's been a two-step process. Anyone who applied could automatically get a four-month extension. But you'd need to give a good reason in order to get the extra two months.

Now, the six-month extension will be automatic.

Just as before, any taxes that are owed will still have to be paid by the April 15 deadline.
