Nell Carter Obit

Singer and actress Nell Carter, who starred in the TV sitcom Gimme a Break, has died.

Her publicist says Carter died this morning at her Beverly Hills home. She collapsed there and was found by one of her 13-year-old adopted sons.

She was 54 years old.

Carter starred as the sassy housekeeper on Gimme a Break, which ran on NBC from 1981 to 1987. She had earlier won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin.

According to the publicist, Carter had suffered from diabetes for years, and underwent brain surgery in 1992 to remove an aneurysm. She recovered, and continued to perform, and had been in rehearsals for the musical Raisin.
